The importance of having a community – Friends, mentors and guides

As I embarked on my journey as an immigrant artist from São Paulo, Brazil, to the United States, I quickly realized that I couldn’t do it alone. Fortunately, along the way, I found a network of mentors, friends, and communities that embraced and supported me, helping to shape my artistic identity and navigate the challenges of building a new life in a foreign land.

From the moment I arrived, I was welcomed with open arms by fellow artists who understood the struggles and triumphs of pursuing one’s passion in a new country. They became my mentors, guiding me through the intricacies of the local art scene, offering invaluable advice, and encouraging me to push the boundaries of my creativity.

But it wasn’t just fellow artists who played a pivotal role in my journey. I was also fortunate to have friends – both old and new – who stood by me through thick and thin, offering unwavering support and encouragement. Whether it was lending a listening ear during moments of doubt or posing as models for my latest artistic endeavors, their presence brought warmth and light to even the darkest of days.

And then there were the communities – vibrant, diverse, and endlessly supportive – that became my second family. From local art collectives to cultural centers, these spaces provided a sense of belonging and camaraderie that was essential for a newcomer like myself. Through workshops, exhibitions, and collaborative projects, I found not only inspiration but also a sense of purpose and belonging that fueled my artistic journey.

But my journey didn’t stop there. Fueled by a desire to explore new mediums and push the boundaries of my artistry, I ventured into the world of music, forming my own jazz band that brought joy and rhythm to audiences far and wide. And when opportunities arose to paint murals commercially, I embraced them wholeheartedly, using my art to beautify spaces and spark conversations in communities across the state.

And now, as I find myself teaching and working at esteemed institutions like Yale and galleries around the state, I am reminded of the countless individuals and communities who have helped me along the way. Their belief in me, their support, and their unwavering faith have not only shaped my artistic identity but also enriched my life in ways I could never have imagined.

As I reflect on my journey from São Paulo to the United States, I am filled with gratitude for the mentors, friends, and communities who have walked alongside me every step of the way. Their presence has been a beacon of light in the darkest of times, a source of strength and inspiration that continues to propel me forward on this exhilarating adventure called life.

So here’s to the mentors who believed in me, the friends who stood by me, and the communities that embraced me – thank you for being the wind beneath my wings, for helping me soar to new heights, and for reminding me that no matter where life takes me, I am never alone.

With love and gratitude,
